A review of an ultra compact and ultra lightweight fishing rod and reel combo that is ideal for multiple fishing applications. Whether it’s as a backup to your primary fishing gear, a travel rod, part of a hiking or backpacking system, or even as an addition to a survival kit or “bug out” bag, this compact and durable combo has every capability to meet the needs of the serious fisherman. Although these are ultralight action rods by nature, they have the versatility to handle a wide range of fish species… from stream trout, to bass, to catfish, and even to plus 20lb carp… these little “workhorses” can handle pretty much anything you can throw at them. Of course, as with any ultralight fishing equipment, some skill and finesse is required. All in all, after fishing with them for the majority of the summer and catching a diverse selection of species, I can honestly say that I absolutely love these rods!

If you’re interested in adding a compact rod and reel combo such as this to your fishing tackle arsenal, I have included a link below to the makers of the original Pen Fishing Rods. I would like to advise exercising a bit of caution if you are looking into purchasing a rod of this type, as there are many “knockoff” versions out there. Having never fished with the lesser quality versions I cannot speak to their quality or durability. However, having caught dozens of fish with the rods of penfishingrods.com (including the standing world record for a rod of this type), I can certainly say that in the hands of a serious fisherman, these rods will stand the test of time.

  6. does it good if i attach baitcast/spincast reel on it?´╗┐

  7. Your website is…. A mess. I was interested in buying one however, the website gets me lost and it looks like something id get popped up when I clicked on some virus link.´╗┐

  8. TOOOOOO MUCH TALKINGGGGčśęčĹÄ´╗┐

  9. where you bought this pen fishing rod ?´╗┐

  10. SGH

true pen fishing rods are way better then the cheap Chinese junk on amazon´╗┐

  11. Would my Daiwa Sweepfire fit on the Goliath rod?´╗┐

  12. Someone needs to come along and redesign these things because even the expensive ones apart from the 6 dollar China products on Amazon break so easily. It's one of those things where the design is so wicked but nobody has made one that isn't almost complete crap/unreliable. ´╗┐

  13. I'm dying to get my hands on the Goliath combo but they aren't taking new orders until March.┬á´╗┐

  14. i just got in the website and it says they have no products available´╗┐

  15. John, do you still consider this brand of compact rods and reels to be the best? Looking to get a telescoping kit in the near future. Thanks for your excellent videos!´╗┐

  16. Bought one of these… First two sections back from tip snapped off the first time i caught a [SMALL] sunny. Not upset though, really. I paid $10 for it, and the shorter "pole" makes it far sturdier. Its not like it was ever meant to cast out super far anyway… lol. Replaced the default mono-line with braided and it still works all-right!´╗┐

  17. Gulp bludgeon worms or maggets they work just like worms and don't go bad unless they loose the cap ´╗┐

  18. For those that may still be interested in these. as of Oct 1st 2014 The company suffered a loss in the family and are not taking new orders at this time. The site says they hope to be back up and running by Christmas.´╗┐

  19. Instant fisherman 2 is far better´╗┐

How many bucks does this rod cost and where can I get one?´╗┐

  21. A note to Jimmy… in some states, such as New Jersey, automatic reels (can be set to catch fish unattended) are illegal. You cannot carry them and tell authorities that "It's only for emergencies."┬á´╗┐

  22. Penfishingrods also carries a fly reel and bait caster that would take up very little room. If you had both the spinning real or bait caster along with the fly reel you could be setup for any kind of fishing in style using very little room and weight in a pack. PS I also carry 3 yo yo reels.´╗┐

  23. hey man thanks for the video i bought one of the extremes in red(baitcast ver.). 9$ on ebay makes me wonder if your version is better quality? but anyway i want to order like 3 of those goliath ┬áversions and they are not on ebay that i could find! order coming soon. what i did with my xtreme is glue it in the extended position because thats just how i want it im not going to backpack with this one ill use my goliaths i plan on ordering.´╗┐

  24. dryocum

Great little rod! I also take my Tenkara with no reel needed.. Both work great! Thanks for the vid…..´╗┐

  25. great video as always and excellent product but i must say as one who has been in public speaking for quite a while try and watch how many times you say "uh" and "um" it can get quite annoying and detract from the video itself. other than that great vid keep them up and just remember to try and not say "Uh" or "Um" so much.´╗┐

  26. Nice review. ┬áI realize this is an old video but glad I managed to see this.´╗┐

  27. could you do a fishing tutorial please.thanks´╗┐

  28. I have caught carp upto 14 pound on 1 of these´╗┐

  29. I have caught carp upto 14 pound on 1 of these´╗┐

  30. I have caught carp upto 14 pound on 1 of these rods ´╗┐

  31. Hey there,

I'd like to get one of these for a survival kit. What is a better option, goliath rear drag, or goliath front drag? I don't know the difference (bait caster I heard would be harder to catch with). Also is aluminum the best material?

    Thanks!´╗┐

  32. i have one and love it and its in my pack at all times took on many week long backpack trips ….getting another one to keep in my truck…´╗┐

  33. You sold me. Picked one up for backpacking.´╗┐

  34. This + the paracord fishing bracelet´╗┐

  35. What are your thoughts on the YOYO fishing reel? I just bought a couple for $8. I liked that the YOYO system allows you to walk away to set up a fire or shelter. I hope they work like people claim.´╗┐

  36. I've been subbed for some time, and keep coming back to this video… just to be clear, the silver one is the goliath and the black one is the extreme? any help would be great!

  37. Checkout the Emmrod System,@emmrod.com. This is a serious group of compact rods – not cheap, but bullet proof

  38. If you're a survivalist and spend most of your time in the outdoors as much as I do then you will enjoy a one in a kind never seen before
